December 7, 2014 04:56 PM
TWO STATE CHAMPIONS WERE UPSET BY IN-STATE RIVALS

DOTHAN, ALA.  – USTA Southern crowned seven champions of the 2014 USTA League 65 & Over Southern Sectional Championships, played here Dec. 5-7.

South Carolina won three of seven titles, taking crowns in the Women’s 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0. Charleston, S.C. and Hot Springs Village, Ark. had two champions, while Hilton Head Island, S.C. was represented with a champion and a finalist.

In two levels, a state’s runner-up B team defeated its champion A team. The championships randomly add a second team from one of the section’s nine states to even out round-robin play.

There were 60 men’s and women’s teams with more than 465 players competing in NTRP levels 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 9.0 combined. Matches were played at the Westgate Tennis Complex and the Azalea Swim & Tennis Club.
